Advocacy & Action

The League of Women Voters takes action on an issue, or advocates for a cause, when there is an existing League position that supports the issue or speaks to the cause.

We have positions established at the local, state, and national level. All League positions are proposed and voted upon by League members. Those receiving wide support are adopted for advocacy action. We are in the process of reviewing and updating our county-wide positions.

Positions result from a process of study

Through study, whether it be national, state, or local, we pursue facts and details to thoroughly understand the issue. Studies are presented to the general membership by the study committee for consensus on the final position.

When members reach consensus, a position statement is adopted, and the board plans advocacy actions based on the final position statement. Advocacy actions can then be taken on the particular issue addressed by the position. Without a position, action/advocacy cannot be taken.
